Tutorial: How to Make Your Own Gold Clasp (The "S" Clasp or Hook)

In jewelry making, autonomy is a luxury. Being able to create every component of your piece, from the first link to the finishing touch, is immensely satisfying. And the piece that best symbolizes this expertise is the clasp.

Making your own clasp isn't as complicated as it seems. The S-shaped (or hook) clasp is one of the oldest, most elegant, and simplest to make. At La Fille du Sud, we guide you through mastering this jewelry-making skill.

1. The Shopping List: A Sturdy Thread and the Right Tools

The secret to a successful clasp is its rigidity . It must never deform.

  • The Ideal Golden Thread:

    • Our Recommendation: You need a thick thread. Our Annealed gold wire of 1.0mm or 1.5mm is perfect. Its annealed state makes it easy to shape, and we will work-harden it intensively.

    • 18k or 9k? Both work. 9k gold , being naturally harder, is an excellent choice for a very strong clasp.

  • Essential Tools:

    • A trio of pliers: flat, round nose, and cutting.

    • A jewelry file.

    • A mallet (with nylon and/or steel head) and a steel anvil.

2. The Tutorial: Your "S" Clasp in 4 Steps

Step 1: Cut and Prepare

Cut a length of 4 to 5 cm from your Thick gold wire . With your file, smooth both ends perfectly so that they are neither sharp nor snagging.

Step 2: Form the Loops

Using your round-nose pliers, grasp one end of the wire and twist it around itself to form a closed loop. Repeat this process on the other side, twisting the wire around itself. in the opposite direction . You should obtain an "S" shape.

Step 3: Work Hardening (The Crucial Step)

Place your S-shaped clasp on your steel block. Using your mallet, gently and evenly hammer it across its entire surface. This action is fundamental : it will harden the metal and give it the "spring" effect which will prevent it from opening on its own.

Step 4: Assembly

Your clasp is finished. All you have to do now is attach it to your creation using two connecting rings , one on each side, which will be welded for maximum security.

Conclusion: The Seal of the Craftsman

Congratulations! You have just created a functional and elegant component, the ultimate signature of your craftsmanship. A handmade clasp is not just a fastener; it is proof of your mastery of the art of jewelry making.
