Buying Guide: 18k Gold Sheet - The Jeweler's Essential

18-karat gold is the standard alloy in French jewelry. Composed of 75% pure gold, it offers an intense, sunny yellow color, complete tarnish resistance, and a luxurious density when worn.

1. What thickness of plate should I choose?

Depending on your project, the thickness of the metal is crucial. Here is our guide for using our cut-to-size strips, minimum 10mm wide and 10mm long :

  • Extra-Thin (0.30 mm): What's it for? It's the ideal thickness for flush settings . The metal is thin enough to be neatly pushed over the stone with a pusher or burnisher while remaining durable. Also ideal for delicate cuts (appliques).

  • The Standard (0.50 mm): What is it used for? The perfect base for making a ring shank , a classic band wedding ring, or a stamped medallion. It offers good rigidity once work-hardened.

  • Thick (0.60 mm and +): For what? For pieces that require strength: men's wedding bands, bangle bracelets, supports for deep engraving or bezel setting.

2. The advantages of buying by the cut

18k gold is an investment. At La Fille du Sud , we tailor our offerings to independent artisans and designers:

  • Budget control: You don't buy a whole 10g plate if you only need 2g for a ring.

  • Quality Guaranteed: Certified 750/1000 gold, non-porous, ready for soldering and polishing

💡 Workshop Tip: Making a ring? You'll probably need wire for the prongs or decoration. 👉 Complete your basket with our 18k Gold Wires >

3. Soldering and Working with 18k Gold

Working with 18-karat gold is a pleasure: it's more pliable than 9k and doesn't oxidize when heated (no stubborn firescale). When joining your bands, be sure to use 18k gold solder (not 9k) to guarantee the color and legal purity of the finished piece.

Technical FAQ

How do I calculate the weight of my order?

The weight depends on the thickness.

  • 0.50 mm thickness ≈ 0.77 g per cm².
  • Tip: Look at the product sheet for each thickness; the weight per cm² is indicated there to help you estimate the cost of your creations.

Can these plates be engraved?

Yes, 18k gold engraves beautifully. For deep engraving (by hand or machine), use thicknesses of 0.50 mm and especially 0.60 mm . 0.30 mm is too thin for double-sided engraving.

Is the metal hallmarked?

No, the raw material (cut to order) is not hallmarked. It is up to you, the designer, to affix your maker's mark and the official state hallmark to the finished piece. However, we guarantee the 750 fineness on the invoice with a certificate of authenticity.
