Buying Guide: Choosing the Right Gold Sheet for Your Creations
Whether you're a professional jeweler or a passionate designer, choosing the right sheet (rolled gold plate) is the foundation of your work. At La Fille du Sud , we offer you a choice of alloys and thicknesses.
1. 18 Carat Gold or 9 Carat Gold: Which material to work with?
- 18-karat gold (750/1000): This is the standard for fine jewelry. Properties: Intense yellow color, tarnish-resistant, and more malleable to work with. Uses: For lifelong jewelry (wedding bands, engagement rings) and valuable creations.
- 9-Carat Gold (375/1000): The robust and economical alternative. Properties: Slightly paler color, harder and more springy metal. Uses: For prototypes, large jewelry pieces (large signet rings), mechanical parts, or accessible collections. To learn more about the technical differences: See our 375 vs. 750 Gold comparison > .
2. What thickness for which project?
We offer strips with a minimum width of 10 mm (1 cm) and a length of 10 mm (1 cm) , available in 4 strategic thicknesses:
- The Fine (0.30 mm): Use: Perfect for making bezel settings (easy to fold over), decorative appliqués or light cutouts.
- The Standard (0.50 mm): Use: The most versatile thickness. Ideal for classic ring shanks , simple medals or pendants.
- Thick (0.60 mm - 0.80 mm): Use: Recommended for men's wedding bands , bangles or pieces to be engraved.
- The Solid (1.00 mm): Use: Reserved for forging, massive signet rings and sculpted pieces.
💡 Designer's Tip: Are you making a ring? The band will be used for the ring, but to make the prongs of your setting or the bails, you will need wire.

Technical FAQ
How do you solder these gold strips?
Depending on the alloy chosen (9k or 18k), it is imperative to use the corresponding solder to avoid color differences at the joint.
-> Find our 18k and 9k Gold Solder Pallions here > .
Is the metal delivered hard or soft?
All our flat sheets are delivered annealed (malleable state). This allows you to shape the piece of jewelry (turn it into a ring, hammer it) upon receipt. It will harden naturally during working (work hardening).
What is the width of the band?
All our products are available from 10 mm (1 cm) wide and 10 mm (1 cm) long , which is ideal for most creations.
